My Grandfather was M. F. Lambert of
Travis Detachment #1. The family story is that his wife was told he was
dead, or assumed that as he was not listed as a survivor at the time,
and then she started getting letters from him from France. The family
story had been that he swam to Ireland, which from my research would
have been impossible unless he was wearing the red cape with the big S
on it, so I surmise that he was in the water but was picked up by an
Irish boat and carried to Ireland. From there we know nothing more, he
died 11-9-1962, and to my knowledge left very little information on the
subject. I was curious if he was listed as dead or missing in any of the
Newspaper articles.
