Countless thanks and appreciation
for this site and guest book. Gothard Waldemar Xavier ("Garth") was my
great-uncle; he served as a private and later corporal and possibly sergeant
in Co. F. He survived and lived into the 1960's, having been a lumberjack,
gold miner with his older brothers, timber and lumber inspector, and
property owner. Born in 1889, he was the youngest of a family of 9 plus a
foster sister. His father, Nils Paul Xavier, was a "pure Lapp," from
northern Norway who is in turn known in historical circles as the first Sami
(Lapp) immigrant to obtain a US theological education as a Lutheran
minister. Rev. NP Xavier died in 1918, survived by his wife, Amanda, and 8
children plus foster daughter, in the knowledge his son had survived the
torpedoing. Uncle Garth was the only member of NP and Amanda's to serve in
uniform in World War I. An older brother, Johan U. Xavier (1870-1963), took
time off from teaching to use carpentry skills as one of the builders of
Fort Lewis.
