The
British
Government requisitioned the Tuscania in 1916 for the war effort.
This Anchor Line steamer, is now placed under the management of the Cunard
Line, as a merchant troopship. In September the Tuscania brought Canadian
Troops from Halifax to Liverpool. A rapid-fire gun was fitted on the stern
of the Tuscania in October. It was called the Four-Inch Gun
In New York, 18th June 1916, the
Tuscania arrived in port, with a large amount of bullion and American
securities estimated by passengers to be worth several million dollars.
Great precautions were taken to prevent the Tuscania from being torpedoed.
Miss Sibyl Eden, an English woman who has been serving with the Red Cross in
Serbia, said she understood a call was soon to be issued urging the 200,000
or more Serbians in this country to join the new Serb army.
